Ring Sponsorship Protest Campaign

Portland Thorns FC have an ongoing sponsorship arrangement with Ring, a home security camera manufacturer owned by Amazon. Ring has a history of playing fast and loose with consumer privacy, and a repeated pattern of supporting questionable law enforcement surveillance practices. These abuses pose an ethical quandary for Thorns supporters:

Can we continue to support a soccer club which takes money from a corporation that may be actively eroding our civil rights, and threatening the safety of our neighbors?

The exact terms of the sponsorship aren't public, but it's reputed to be a multi-year deal. The club might be contractually bound and unable to end the sponsorship before the end of, say, the 2027 season. We need to be prepared for the possibility that success might look like the organization deciding not to renew, rather than canceling mid-contract. This might be a slow-burn campaign over the next two seasons.

We encourage fans to boycott new merchandise with the Ring logo. The club will look at what sells and what doesn't. And they sell plenty of Thorns merchandise that isn't Ring branded, and the Riveters do too! Folks who do have Ring-branded kit can be assisted with removing the logo, or invited to tape over the logo in protest. Refuse to wear it unmodified if you wear it at all.
